How Long Do AA, AAA and D Batteries Last?

Shelf life vs. running time: the two numbers every retailer should understand.

There are two different numbers: shelf life (storage, no load) and service life (running a device). Alkaline batteries typically hold 5–10 years of shelf life; running time depends entirely on the device drain.

Rough service-life examples: a wall clock runs 1–2 years on one AA; a high-drain toy or flashlight lasts 3–10 hours; smoke detectors use 9V or AA for 1–2 years.

Carbon-zinc cells discharge faster and are best for low-drain use — good for promotional or entry lines. Lithium coin cells (CR2032 etc.) run 2–5 years in remotes and fobs.

Storage tips: cool (10–25°C), dry, original packaging, never mix old and new cells, and remove cells from devices stored for more than 3 months.
