How Many Volts Is a AA Battery?

1.5V, 3V, 9V, 12V — a no-confusion voltage table for every common cell.

Most household batteries come in three voltages: 1.5V (AA, AAA, C, D and most button cells), 3V (CR lithium coin cells like CR2032) and 9V (6LR61 multi-cell packs). 12V specialty cells include the 23A and 27A remote-control cells.

If you need 3V from alkaline cells, two 1.5V cells in series achieve it — but a single battery is always marked with its nominal voltage (1.5V, 3V, 9V).

To measure: set a multimeter to DC volts, touch the probes to both terminals (red +, black −). Fresh 1.5V cells read about 1.55–1.62V; below 1.35V under load they are nearly exhausted.
